Unruly Nature by Jen Hewett
Jen Hewett is an author, printmaker and textile artist, and Unruly Nature is her first collection as guest designer with Ruby Star Society. If her aesthetic seems familiar it may be because you remember her Imagined Landscapes fabric collection a few years back with Cotton + Steel.
Jen designed Unruly Nature during the summer of 2020. Her daily walks through local parklands provided consistency and light during those days of sheltering in place due to the pandemic and social unrest. She was inspired by the way the natural world just kept on keeping on - hence the title Unruly Nature. The palette of caramel, gold, pink and dusty blues is both bright yet soft.
There's a bounty of florals and the hero print is clearly the Icelandic Poppies which comes in caramel, bluebell and cloudy grey.
Sharing the same intricate illustration style is the Snowdrops design with wonderfully delicate linework in the leaves. There is also a tiny touch of metallic.
Some of the designs like the Heart Flowers, shown below, and Cup & Saucer Vine designs have a more naïve, folk art style. They are a nice nod to Jen's work as a screen printer.
The collection is rounded out with these tonal fabrics in the densely patterned Palmiers and more open Tendrils designs. Fabrics like these are a great support act and handy addition to the stash as they provide visual interest but also let others in the group be the hero.
And there's canvas!
It is such a treat. There are also 9 cotton linen canvas prints to choose from, ready for your bag making and home decor projects. They are also perfect for more structured garments like skirts and pants
The canvases are $35 per meter or if its too hard to choose half metre bundles are $150
